Hong Kong landmarks: Kowloon district

When arriving in Hong Kong, people usually rent rooms in hotels in the Kowloon area. Almost all of the cheapest Hong Kong accommodation is located here, and there are also many places that are quite interesting to visit.

Chilin nunnery (Shilin)

This building stands apart from other local tourist sites, but, despite this, it deserves some attention. Moreover, it literally takes a few minutes to go from the metro to it. And next to the monastery there is a picturesque garden, where it is good to just walk.

  • You can get there on the green line of the metro to Diamond Hill station, exit C1 / C2.
  • The monastery can be visited any day from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, but it is recommended to come here before 3:30 pm, since not everything will be open later. The inner garden of the monastery can be visited until six o'clock in the evening. Outdoor, Nan Nin Garden - from nine in the morning to seven in the evening.

The city behind the wall

This place may be of interest mostly to amateurs and connoisseurs of history. In short, just a couple of decades ago there was a real crush here: more than 40 thousand people lived on an area of 150 × 250 m. The functions of the government here were performed by the mafia. There were hospitals, factories - in a word, everything that was needed for complete self-sufficiency, except that this place was forbidden for the police. Later, the Hong Kong government decided to destroy it, and over time, little by little, but did it. Indeed, 40 thousand people per patch of 150 × 250 m is a very large crowd of people!

Well, today this place is nothing more than a kind of "museum" park, where photographs and expositions of the time of existence of that now famous "city within a city" are exhibited.

You can get there by metro to Lok Fu station (green line), then walk about 20 minutes.

Working hours: 24/7.

Visiting prices: admission is free.

Area with local cuisine

Once in the Kowloon walled city, it makes sense to try the real national dishes of Hong Kong. There is no special catering point here, but there is a whole area with dozens of places that serve the daily food of Hong Kong people. Here you can find shrimp dumplings, a wide variety of amazing noodles, any sugar-rich treats - and this is just a small part. This place is not included in the list of popular tourists, so food is sold without frenzied cheats, everything is fair.

How to get there: walk from Kowloon walled city, which will take 10-20 minutes.

Markets

All the Hong Kong markets described here are located next to each other, and two of them are so dense that it is impossible to tell where one ends and the other begins.

Flower market

This place includes very few streets, but there is simply an unimaginably many different varieties of flowers and seeds for sale. Works during the day.

You can get there along the green metro line - Prince Edward station, and then walk about ten minutes just on foot.

Women's Market and Goldfish Market

It is difficult to see a clear line between the two markets, but it does sell clothes, shoes, household goods, jewelry, goldfish and smaller animals. Open all daylight hours.

To get here, you need to walk from the Prince Edward metro station (green line), which will take about 5-10 minutes.

Temple Street Night Market

Once you get to the Flower or, as an option, the "women's-fish" market in the evening, it is not pointless to visit the night market at the same time. The route there passes through the “street of performances”, which contains countless eateries, where they can eat at a reasonable price, and street musicians earn their art, which is why there are always a large number of people there. As for the market - it should be called "evening", not "night", as it closes at midnight. Well, they sell various souvenirs and other small things that warm the soul.

Business hours: 4:00 pm to midnight.

To get here, you need to go from the Yau Ma Tei station (red line) through the "street with performances".

Sky 100 (Hong Kong International Trade Center)

Those who like looking at the city from above will definitely like the Sky 100 platform. Here the ticket is overpriced, while there are free ones in Hong Kong, but it is here that it is most convenient to admire the city's panorama in the glow of lights, which is already a big plus in the evening.

You can get there by taking the yellow or blue metro line to the station. Kowloon, Exit C1 / D1.

It works daily from ten in the morning to nine in the evening.

Ticket prices: 160 HKD.

The park Kowloon Park

Deeper in the area is Kowloon Park. It does not stand out too much for its size, but it is clean and neat here, in addition, there are a lot of flamingos. Anyone who feels tired of the bustle of the city and busy schedule should visit here.

You can get there by the red metro line to the station. Jordan or Tsim Sha Tsui, get off at A1.

Working hours: from 5 am to midnight.

Price per visit: admission is free.

Avenue of Stars

This waterfront tourist attraction is the most popular with Hong Kong visitors. Here, among other things, you can take your photo with a statue of Bruce Lee.

Kowloon District Museums

Anyone traveling to Hong Kong imagines a huge ultra-modern metropolis in Asia, where modern architecture and the exoticism of a nation are combined. And only on a walk can one estimate how true these ideas were, and how much they were not. However, in this matter, visits to local museums will help much more, where you can learn about the changes in the city in a given decade, how and how it lived, what it breathed. And you can just have a good rest there, too, if you give preference to intellectual rest.

There are a lot of museums in Hong Kong, more than a dozen, and not even two. It is difficult to imagine that such a huge number of museums can be in the same city, but the fact, as they say, is on the face - they are here and many are popular with both tourists and locals. It doesn't make sense to describe all of them in this article, but some are worth it.

Four of the most visited of the local museums are good, also in terms of location: they are all located on about. Kowloon, and they are not too far apart. And two - in general, they are in the same building.

Hong Kong History Museum

This is possibly the most curious museum in all of Hong Kong. Here you can learn a lot about the times of the Opium Wars, the years of the Japanese occupation, even about the peculiarities of the industrial boom of the recent decades. All this is told by the objects on display, as well as videos.

You can get there along the purple metro line - st. East Tsim Sha Tsui, take exit P2.

It can be visited on weekdays 10: 00-18: 00, on weekends - an hour longer, closed on Tuesday.

Entrance costs HKD 10 all days except Wednesday, when there is no admission fee.

Science Museum

Close to the historical one is the local science museum. It may be interesting here only for children. Some curious objects like invisible rooms there are, but otherwise - empty. On the plus side, perhaps the fact that it actually stands in the same building as the historic one, so you can look in there for a minute, if there is one.

You can get there using the metro services, on the purple line - st. East Tsim Sha Tsui, Exit P2.

Visitors are accepted on weekdays at 10: 00-19: 00, on weekends - from ten in the morning to five in the afternoon. The museum is closed on Thursday.

Entering will cost 20 HKD, except Wednesday - then you do not have to pay, as well as for visiting the historical museum located in the same building.

Space museum

This is also a place worth visiting. Similar to the history and science, the space museum is located in the Kowloon area. Here visitors are shown videos on the Arctic and space topics. Moreover, viewing is conducted not on an ordinary screen, but on a very large domed one, and this is the advantage of the museum. There is only one drawback: all the voice acting of these videos is in English.

You can get there along the red line of the metro - st. Tsim Sha Tsui.

Opening hours: closed on Tuesdays, open from 1 pm to 9 pm on other weekdays, Sat-Sun - from ten in the morning to nine in the evening.

You can watch one video by paying 32 HKD.

Art museum

More than 15 thousand pieces of art are exhibited here, including calligraphy, antiques, famous works of art, the creations of skilled artisans, and the like. This museum houses a complete collection of thematic art exhibits, which have been taken from sources from various countries, including China.

It is closed for restoration until the beginning of 2019, and then the exposition will be updated, which will also take a long time.

You can get there along the red line of the metro to the station. Tsim Sha Tsui.

Disneyland

This place does not belong to the Kowloon area, but still it is worth putting his review here. Children will be the most interesting in Disneyland. The cost of tickets here bites, but this is the case with any Disneyland. It is also recommended to visit it on weekdays, and not on Chinese New Year - on weekends and during this holiday there are huge crowds of local residents.

You can get there along the pink metro line to the station. Disneyland Resort, you have to pay HKD 20 to get from Kowloon by subway.

Lantau Island (Big Buddha)

This attraction is also not something to correctly include in the list of objects of Kowloon, but it is most appropriate to mention it here. You can reach Lantau Island by cable car, you can travel by bus, or you can walk on foot.

Hong Kong Island landmarks

On the island of Hong Kong there are more objects of interest for tourists than in the Kowloon area. Below is a description of them.

Observation wheel

You can get there by the red metro line to Central, exit A.

Ferris wheel working hours: daily from 10 am to 11 pm.

You can ride for 100 HKD.

Hong Kong Island museums

The museums located on this island will undoubtedly appeal to visitors, especially amateurs and connoisseurs.

Tea Museum

Not everyone may find it interesting here, but the building is located in a good place in the park, and close to the tram stop on Victoria Peak. If you have free twenty minutes, you can visit this museum. At least just for the sake of looking at what tea accessories the locals used at one time or another, and also to buy some exotic type of tea for themselves.

You can get there along the red line of the metro - st. Admiralty, exit C1.

Available to visit seven days a week 10: 00-18: 00.

There is no need to pay for a visit.

Money Museum in Hong Kong

An exhibition for the amateur to look at paper money. It takes up a little space, literally a single room, but here, at the height of the fifty-fifth floor, there are panoramic windows. To visit you need a passport or his photo. To get here, they issue a special pass.

You can get there by the red metro line - Central station, as an option - Central pier, IFC Mall skyscraper.

Madame Tussauds museum

Museum of optical illusions

Situated on the third floor of the Victoria Peak gallery, this establishment is also very popular. The younger generation will definitely like its exposition, and some adults will also like it.

Visitors are accepted daily from 10: 00-22: 00, the ticket office trades until 21:00.

For a visit, an adult needs to pay 150 HKD, and for a child or pensioner it will cost 100 HKD.

Central Mid-Levels Covered Escalator - The World's Longest Escalator

The city is located in uneven, mountainous terrain, and therefore it is quite appropriate to use an escalator here, especially one as long as this one, which is considered, although not quite correctly, to be the longest on Earth. And for the guests of Hong Kong, a ride here is quite an interesting experience. This escalator goes through several streets, so it's not that hard to spot. You can enter (and exit too) on any of these streets. Considering that there are many cafes, shops and just interesting places for a walk on these streets, it definitely makes sense to do it. From 6:00 to 10:00 this escalator works exclusively for the descent, delivering people living in the area where they need them (mainly to places of work), and from 10:30 to 24:00 it picks up passengers.
As for whether it is actually the longest in the world, one can definitely answer negatively: the world's longest escalators are located in Russia, in the metro stations of St. Petersburg and Moscow. And the Central Mid-Levels Covered Escalator got into the Guinness Book as the longest escalator system, despite the fact that none of the 30 escalators included in it is distinguished by a special length. Such are the " legal and linguistic subtleties "!

You can get there along the red line of the metro - st. Central, exit D2.

Antique street

This small street contains at most a dozen small shops selling antiques. In tourist places, you can only buy all sorts of boring stuff at a biting price, but here, on the contrary, you can find something really incredible, and much cheaper than you might expect. Typically, these points are open until 6 pm.

Man Mo temple and Hollywood road

Both of these objects (temple Manmou and Hollywood road) are on the "must see" list in Hong Kong. That is why the temple is usually packed with visitors, so it makes little sense for another (or even a whole family) to squeeze into this crowd, and Hollywood road is nothing more than another place where stupid tourists are sold all uninteresting trash under the guise of souvenirs. In our opinion, a visit to any of these places is just a senseless killing of time, which in Hong Kong is not difficult to spend with much greater benefit or much more interesting. However, it's up to you, of course, to decide.

You can get there along the red line of the metro - st. Central, exit D2.

Open 8: 00-18: 00

You do not need to pay for a visit.

Staunton Street Bar District

Next to the escalator and the Manmou Temple, there is a place for a good rest over a beer mug. It gets very busy in the evenings. Local bars are often packed with people from all over the world, and you can arrange a rest until nightfall. Everything is quite expensive here, but this is Hong Kong, there is not much that is cheap here.

How to find: Take the red subway line to Central, another option is Sheung Wan.

Zoo and Botanical Garden

In the interior of Hong Kong Island there is a zoo "in one bottle" with a local botanical garden. The zoo itself, as they say, does not shine - there are not many animals in it, but you can also look at them. Here you can also look at a variety of plants. but you can just sit on this or that bench.

How to find: Metro Central.

Business Hours: Open daily from 6 am to 10 pm.

No fees required.

Victoria Peak

Here you can take a tram cab to the observation deck. Here you can see the city not only from a height, but also from a different angle, and not only during the day, but also in the evening, if you want. And yet - although it is believed that there is only one observation deck, in fact there are several of them. Moreover, there you can first admire the sunset, and later return to admire the city views at night.

Hong Kong Park

This is, in fact, not one, but two whole parks, making up one, between which the road passes. Not the best place, but far from the worst - suitable for rest. The most important thing to visit with children: there is something to do. Open all day.

How to find: Take the red / blue metro line to Admiralty, exit C1.

Observation deck (Central plaza)

Here, as in some other places, you can enjoy the Hong Kong view from a great height for free. A considerable advantage is the local panoramic windows, which give the possibility of viewing as much as 360 degrees. To visit Hong Kong without going here is not very smart.

You can get there by taking the dark blue subway line to Wan Chai Station, Exit A1, going up to the 46th floor.

You can visit on weekdays 9: 00-18: 00, on Saturdays 9: 00-13: 00, on the last day of the week it is closed.

Ticket prices: No fees required.

Racetrack (Happy Valley)

Here, in this city, you can visit a real hippodrome. Alas, you can get here only on Wednesdays, on other days there are no races. Well, if you are lucky and you are in Hong Kong on Wednesday, you may find it interesting to visit the racetrack. Here you can either drink a beer in a pleasant company, while watching the races, or add spice to the show by betting on some horse.

You can get there by metro to the Causeway station, exit A.

Working hours: once a week, on Wednesdays.

Ticket prices: 10 HKD.

Montane mansion

It will be a pleasure to be here for those amateur photographers who like to take pictures of pretentious heaps.

How to find: Take the dark blue subway line to Tai Koo Station or take the tram.

Aberdeen area

This area may be of interest to tourists. The most important thing here is to cross the river in a small boat: the fee is symbolic, and the process is quite curious. Here you can also start a private guide on an excursion for half an hour or an hour on the Hong Kong canals on a similar transport, but you will have to pay more for this. Also, here you can just walk along the embankment - it is very beautiful in the evening, when it is illuminated by lanterns painted in red.

How to find: from the metro station (station Ocean Park) take bus number 73 to Aberdeen.

Ticket prices: for half an hour excursion 60 HKD, for an hour - 100 HKD.

Ocean park

Ocean Park is one of the most popular local tourist sites. Usually it is visited in the company of loved ones - family or friends. It is recommended to visit this place for the whole day, from morning until late in the evening, as there are many different attractions and a lot of people in queues.

How to get there: It is recommended to take the metro here. There are maps where there is no guidance line to the park itself, but one can be seen while in the Hong Kong subway - it is called Ocean Park. The light green line intersects with the blue one, which runs along the island. Hong Kong. Ocean Park can be accessed directly from Kowloon using the metro service for HKD 12.

Available for relaxation daily 10: 00-18: 00.

How much to pay: for an adult - 438 HKD, for a child - 219 HKD.

Beaches about. Hong Kong

On about. Hong Kong has some very noteworthy beaches.

Repulse Bay Beach

This is the most visited of them, while the most glamorous. It is located on about. Hong Kong is also adjacent to luxury hotels. It is large and there are many bars and cafes nearby. There is also an equipped area where you can barbecue. In the evenings, different parties are held here, so this beach is suitable for lovers of this kind of entertainment.

How to get there: You can get here from the Central's Exchange (Hong Kong metro station or Central, exit A) on the following buses: 73, 260 and 973, paying the fare 10 HKD.

Middle Bay Beach

Near the previous one there is a tiny Middle Bay - it is much smaller than its neighbor, but there is noticeably more tranquility here, and there is also a barbecue area here.

How to get there: You can just walk here in about half an hour from Repulse Beach.

South Bay Beach (Nam Wan Beach)

This one, like the previous one, is not held in high esteem by the townspeople. Basically, for the reason that it takes a long time to get to it. But this beach is possibly the best in Hong Kong. The reason for this is not only the fine sand on the shore and the good bottom of the reservoir, but also its low popularity: there are no large crowds of tourists.

How to get there: from Repulse Beach, walk about 60 minutes, and from Middle Bay about half an hour.

Shek O Beach

There are few people on this beautiful beach, and all conditions are created here to relax in the company of family or friends. Here you can find places where you can barbecue, showers, and also - here you can admire the wonderful panorama of the bay. The only drawback of the beach is the long time spent on the road, but thanks to the excellent local transport system, this very drawback is almost stopped.

You can get there by metro, taking the dark blue line to the station. Shau Kei Wan, Exit A3, then take bus 9 for 7 HKD. Leave transport to Shek O.

Big wave beach

Next to the previous one there is another beach, and more specifically - Big Wave. This place is popular with surfers and those who just enjoy swimming, swinging on high waves. There are few people here, there are enough cafes with seafood on the menu, and in general you can enjoy your vacation.

You can get there by a dark blue lin. metro - st. Shau Kei Wan, exit A3. Then take bus number 9, paying 7 HKD. Leave transport to Big Wave.

Stanley District

This place seems to be specially created for lovers of jostling in crowds of tourists. The Stanley area is full of restaurants and cafes, there is an embankment. It is also famous for the prison in which the Japanese held the British during the occupation of Hong Kong.

You can get there by taking bus 260 at the Central metro station. In total, the journey will take 7 HKD and approximately sixty minutes.

Hiking on the Dragon's Back

A great option for spending time. With good weather, it even becomes possible to enjoy good views of several local bays at the same time. And on the way, you can look at the Shek O and Big Wave beaches. If you allocate a few hours for such a walk, it is quite easy to get around the entire "Dragon's Back".

You can get there by subway - Shau Kei Wan station on the blue line. From the stop located near the station, take bus 9, paying the fare 7 HKD. And there - to tell the driver where he should stop the transport. Moreover, it is likely that not only you will come out.

There will only be one road, so it will be difficult to go astray. And along the route there are signposts everywhere. As for the return, you can be calm about this: the buses on which you can go back run often and until late.

Hong Kong- a dynamically developing "state" within a state that plays an important role in the world arena. The ultra-modern city has a special status and, despite the high concentration of modern buildings, highways and industrial facilities, is of particular interest to travelers.

As a state and capital of the eponymous district in Hong Kong, Hong Kong has a special status for the PRC, although it is difficult to find anything Chinese in it, except for the large population.

Where is?

Hong Kong or, as it is called, Xianggang is located on the Kowloon Peninsula, several islands (Hong Kong, Lantau, Lamma, Cheung Chau), and he also owns about 262 small islets scattered across the Chinese Sea.

The largest island in Hong Kong, both in size and population, is Lantau.

Although most of it has not yet been explored due to the numerous mountains and hills, but number of inhabitants for 1 sq.m. here is really impressive (1000 to 3000). A significant part of the region is occupied by the Kowloon Peninsula and the northern coast of Hong Kong Island.

Every year Hong Kong reclaims more land from the sea, so the country's territory is slightly increasing in size. Today, its area, together with all adjacent islands, occupies about 1104 sq. km.

Climate

Hong Kong is characterized by subtropical climate cool, as well as hot, but humid.

In winter time the air warms up to + 22 ° C during the day, and at night the air cools down to +10 degrees. In summer the thermometer can show temperatures up to + 33 ° C. The typhoon period lasts from May to September.
