Elagin Island

To the west of the Stone Island is one of the most famous islands of St. Petersburg - Elagin Island. Initially, in 1703, he was called Mishin, or Mikhailin. On the ancient Swedish and Finnish maps, it is designated: Mistula-Saari, which is literally translated and means "Bear Island". Perhaps it was called Finnish hunters, by analogy with the names of other Islands of the Neva Delta: a holy, elk (now Vasilyevsky), cat (now canonersky), Voronius (now pharmacy) and so on. However, there is a legend that claims that the etymology of the name of the island has Russian origin.

This is how it sounds in the retelling of Stalphansky: "In one of the bright May nights of 1703, a small detachment of transobrachters made a reconnaissance on the Islands of the Neva Delta. Carefully walked Russian soldiers at a small extreme to the seaside, making his way with difficulty in a swampy forest. Suddenly some crash heard. The soldiers stopped, took guns on the butt and began to peering in the barely green bushes, trying to see what the Swedes were attached. And suddenly because of the big bolted tree, the figure of a large gray bear rose from a heap of burmore with roar. "" Fu, you, the abyss, "broke out from one of the Russians," Thied the Swedes to see, and there was a breakfast, it means that this island is not Swedish, and Mishkin. "

At the beginning of the XVIII century, Peter I complained the island of Chancellor P.P. Shafirova. In the middle of this century, the island belonged to A.P. Melgunov. Both are marked in the history of Petersburg toponymics. The island for some time was called Shaffirov, and then Melgunov. The name: Lisys Nose, in the similarity of the tip of the island with the face of the red inhabitant of island overgrowns.

The island officially received its modern name in 1790 by one of the owners - Ober-Hofmeister of the Imperial Yard Ivan Pontilofelvich Elagina. At first he was called Elaginsky, but in two years - Elagin. The time of time is preserved in folklore. Two ancient oaks in Elagina Palace still called in the old age: "Elaginsky".

If you believe urban folklore, one of the most mysterious pages of domestic history is connected with Elagin Island - the history of Russian Freemasonry. According to St. Petersburg legends, the first Masonic bed was founded by the king in Kronstadt, after his return from the overseas travel of 1717, although it must be admitted, the first documentary evidence of Masonic lodges in Russia belongs to 1731. But in folklore it is believed that it was Peter to take out the Mason Statute from Europe from Europe. Maybe, therefore, Russian Masons in the XVIII century Peter I used special respect. At their meetings, they even sowed the "Song Peter Great", composed by Derzhavin.

Meanwhile, the attitude of power to Masonry in Russia was ambiguous. It was allowed, they prohibited. Did not complain of Masons and in a common medium. Solva claimed that something unclean was happening at their meetings, especially since Masons in Russia were associated exclusively with the French, and France in the eyes of the townships heard the source of all mortal sins of humanity. Even homegrown, own masons are different as Frankmams, that is, the French masons were not called. And the derivative from Frankmason - Farmajazon very soon turned into a frank criticism. True, it is also connected with the fact that access to Masonic lodges was strictly limited and stipulated by numerous conditions, among which the antiquity of the genus, a high social situation and wealth were not in the last place.

Among St. Petersburg Masons there are names of prominent public and statesmen, major military officials and even members of the royal family. It is known that Emperor Alexander I almost for ten years consisted of a member of one of the Masonic lodges. According to the legend, the emperor Paul I is still in beating his heir to the throne was "Cemely accepted into Masons" by Senator I.P. Elagin. Elagin was considered one of the most prominent figures of Russian Freemasonry. The most incredible things spoke about him. Even after his death, Elagin remained in the center of attention of urban folklore. So, the legends argue that when opening his crypt in the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, the grave of the senator turned out to be empty.

The name of another world-famous Mason is connected with Ivan Perfliavich Elagin - Giuseppe Caliosostro. This person deserves in order to say a few words about it. Caliostro is far from the only name of the famous adventurist XVIII century. In Europe, the son of poor parents Giuseppe Balsamo is known under the names of Tisko, Melin, Belmont, Pellegrini and some others. And although the official church has characterized him as a fraudster, charlatan and debudders, his popularity in Europe ascended incredibly highly. His busts were decorated with many aristocratic salons, while his images could be seen at the ladies, tobacker, nasal scarves, coffee cups, and even perrsts. However, despite such a clear public interest, the French king expelled him from France, Caliostro went to London, from where Bastille's assault and the death of the French royal family on Guillotine.

Count D. Caliostro

The life of the "Great Maga", as his contemporaries called, washed by the most incredible legends. According to one of them, he lived even during the World Flood and escaped from death exclusively thanks to the biblical Noah, which took him to his ark. According to others, Caliosostro was personally familiar with the Old Testament Moses and Antique Alexander Macedonian, talked with Jesus Christ and even attended Calvary with His execution. But he himself modestly argued that he was born from the Great Master of Maltese Order and Trapezund Princess.

In 1780, Caliostro arrived in Russia, as if, on the advice of another famous French adventurist, Count Saint-Germa. Here he modestly introduced himself as "Gishpansky Colonel", a doctor, Count Phoenix. In the highest Petersburg light, Caliostro appeared in black robe, embroidered with gold hieroglyphs and in the recovery of the ancient Egyptian priest.

It is known that while Catherine II was extremely cold to him, he patronized her favorite Mescal Prince Grigory Potemkin. Caliostro managed to decrease respect and many other St. Petersburg dignitaries. If you believe legends, Caliostro has become its own man at Graph Stroganov, in whose palace which was looking for a philosophical stone. Then he lived in the house I.P. Elagina on Elagin Island. It's as if on his advice deeply under the pavilion, the pier arranged a secret hall, where from the Elaginsky palace led the underground move. The hall was allegedly intended for secret Masonic meetings. They say walking once near this pavilion, Caliostro predicted the death of the Russian Empire, "seeing her doomed lyrics in the Neva."

Caliosro's public career in Russia ended unexpectedly. Once he undertook to cure a hopelessly sick child, and when he, without preparing the methods of treating Charlatan, died, long hid his death from his parents, continuing "experiments" to revive the dead boy. Catherine II took advantage of this monstrous case and ordered to immediately send the Caliostro beyond the country. True, according to some legends, it happened differently. As if Ekaterina became aware of the love relationship of the wife of Caliosostro "Pretty Lorenzo" with Prince Gregory Potemkin. Anyway, Caliostro, together with his wife, immersed a kibitu and secretly taken to Mitava. And the rumors spread in St. Petersburg, as if Caliostro was driving at the same time through all the "fifteen" metropolitaries, leaving his personal painting everywhere.

But on this adventure of Caliostro in Russia did not end. Many mystics claim that at the turn of the XIX and XX centuries, Caliostro again appeared in St. Petersburg under the name of the Magician of Sigir. Did not pay the attention of this "magician and the wizard" and modern legends. They claim that in the mirrors of Elagina Palace and today, from time to time, the shadow of Count Caliostro appears with Masonic symbols in the hands - the hammer and triangle of the bricklayer. If someone manages to meet with him with her eyes, then in the mirror you can see how Caliostro raises his hands up, to the sky, the moment freezes in this mysterious pose, then turns and slowly disappears.

Eastern facade of the Elaginsky Palace

Elaginsky Palace - one of the most beautiful park buildings of the architect Karl Rossi was built by order of Emperor Alexander I in 1818-1822 for the Empress-Mother Mary Fedorovna. It was the first experience of ensemble construction in St. Petersburg, undertaken by another young architect. Upon completion of construction, as a sign of recognition of the merit of the Arch Republic, the Academy of Arts elects it with "free general student", and the king appoints him additional salary.

The talent of the architect and in the city folklore is marked. In St. Petersburg, there were enthusiastic poems attributed to our pet - sparkling Pushkin's poet:

What brush which cutter

Pictures an Elagin Palace!

With the end of the construction of the Elaginsky Palace, on the island on the project of architect Rossi and Gardener D. Bush, an extensive landscape park with artificial ponds and canals, picturesque islands, bridges and walking alleys are divided.

The western tip of Elagina Islands, the so-called arrow, was specially popular with Petersburgers. The history of this popularity dates back to the middle of the XVIII century and is associated with the name of the famous St. Petersburg beauty Countess Yulia Pavlovna Samoylova.

In the Largest Sight of St. Petersburg, Samilov was called the Queen of the Salons. She was worshiped and called "Petersburg Religion". Young beauty, the owner of an extraordinary mind and a significant state was the hostess of a generic female manor near St. Petersburg, near the royal village, - Count Slavs. It still has a legend of the romantic underground course, which led from the manor house to the local church.

The main facade of the Elaginsky Palace

From 1826 to 1839, she lived in Italy. Famous musicians, artists, writers gathered in her luxurious country house near Milan. Among them: Ferens Sheet, Joakino Rossini, Orest Cyprosensky, Alexander Turgenev. Samoilova was a long-term muse of the artist Karl Bryullov. It is enough to say that only on one of his famous canvas "Last Day Pompei", he three times captured the appearance of Julia Pavlovna. It was distinguished by love for art, a democratic way of thinking and independence in relations with the strong world of this - the quality, the established away from the "all-seeing eye and the surviving ears" and equally appreciated at all times both in Italy and in Russia.

Countess Yu.P. Samoilova

In the gloomy follow-up time of the Nikolaev reaction, Petersburgers especially treated examples of proud dignity and independence. The evidence of them was carefully preserved. Transmitted from the mouth to the mouth, they became beautiful legends who decorated the history of the city. One of these legends whose heroines of Julia Pavlovna Samoilov became talking about the birth of the evening festivities in St. Petersburg on the Elagina Islands arrow.

At the receptions that Samoilov arranged in Russia during their arrivals in Russia, literally the entire Petersburg was gone. At such days, the royal village was noticeably empty, which, naturally, annoyed Nikolai I. The emperor decided to go to the trick. He suggested that Samoilova sell him the Count Slav. The proposal of the king looked at the orders, and Samoylova had to agree. But at the same time, she gave to understand Nikolay that she had the meaning of the Jesuit tricks of the royal proposal. According to the legend, she asked to convey to the emperor, "that they did not go to Slavyanka, but to the Countess Samoilova, and wherever she was, will continue to go to her."

Entrance to the park on Elagin Island. Postcard of the beginning of the XX century

The next day, in the evening,, accompanied by a narrow circle of fans, Julia Pavlovna went on the arrow of the Elagina Islands at the time. "Here they will come to the Samoilova Countess here," she would say. And indeed, since then, the western tip of Elagina Islands in the past, the western tip of Elagina Islands began to move more and more Petersburgers, until this arrow turned into one of the most favorite places of evening festivities of the metropolitan nobility.

In the XIX century, the Arrow Elagina Island, St. Petersburg Mccles nicknamed "Poant" - whether to similar the tip of the arrow with a sock of ballet shoes, or to the memory of an impatient desire to become tiptoe, stretch out and stopped waiting for the moment of full sunset for the horizon of the Gulf of Finland.

So, in the second half of the XIX century, Elagin Island became a place of crowded great-minded festivities of the St. Petersburg nobility.

Meanwhile, the road to the island was walking past along the entire coast of the Nevsky Lip of the poorest workers of the Slobodok of Brewwright and Paper Pharmaceutical Factory, past the buildings of the Sitz and Wood-working enterprises, workshops of shipbuilding and metalworking factories. In this sense, all the way to Elagin Island was a sharp contrast between the aristocratic luxury of the royal St. Petersburg and the irresponsive poverty of his outskirts. This gave rise to a well-known poverty formula that included the proverb to the Golden Foundation of St. Petersburg phraseology: "I am doing a rat to Elagina Cape."

Arrow Elagina Islands. Postcard of the beginning of the twentieth century

In 1932, one of the first Soviet centers of Sunday recreation and entertainment workers - the Central Park of Culture and Leisure, or in the abbreviation language - CPKIO, were opened at Elagin Island. The park was decorated with a new Soviet symbolism. The high attributes were installed bronze and gypsum images of sports girls with oars and rackets, courageous young men in army form, pioneers with ties on the neck. The best creative forces of Leningrad attracted to work on the manufacture of sculptures. So, the sculptor Elena Yanson-Manizer ordered a sculpture of the ballerina. As soon as the bronze dancer appeared on one of the parks, as the legend was born that when working on a statue, the sculptor posed her girlfriend, graduate of the Leningrad choreographic school Galina Ulanov. Parking sculpture received a nickname "Dancer".

By 1980, the sculpture of the ballerina came to a catastrophic state. Suffice it to say that by that time she had no hand and legs. The dancer was dismantled and removed into one of Elagina Palace's basements. But almost the new times came, as the sculpture remembered. In 2004, in the courtyard of the Russian Ballet Academy. AND I. Vaganova, as the old choreographic school is now called, installed a monument of an outstanding ballerina Galina Sergeyevna Ulanova, which theatrical critics have long been dubbed "Great Some". The times were heavy, finance for the manufacture of new monuments lacked, and the initiators perpetuating the memory of the Great Ballerina were remembered for the most park sculpture. She was decided to renovate and use as a monument. So the generalized sculptural image of a dancing girl, crowded with the joy of happy life, so beloved by the Soviet breeders of the 1930s, turned into a monument to a concrete person.

Meanwhile, the CPKIO became one of the favorite sites of the citizens. Among the population, he was affectionately called "chick". And that here played a crucial role in the choice of folklore toponym - sound associations, easily captured in the famous abbreviation, or genetic memory of the long-standing associative communications Elagina Cape with ballet shoes - "pointers", to say difficult. Most likely, both.

Address: St. Petersburg, about. Elagin.

How to get to Elagina Islands? There are many ways, but it is not important. For what you need to go there, this is what the question is. And Elagin Island is attractive in St. Petersburg to many. Let's start first.

Let's start with amazing landscapes

The natural beauty of Elagina Islands is due to a feature of its location. He is in the Delta of Neva, near her mouth. From both sides is washed by Nevsky sleeves: large and middle Neva, and from the seaside side - the Finnish Bay of the Baltic Sea.

Since ancient times, seaside lands were low and marshy. Elagin Island is no exception. Over time, its territory, as well as others, was dying. As for natural vegetation, it was previously represented by coniferous rocks, but over time they began to plant and "exotoms" - broader trees and a variety of shrubs. It is believed that the most first trees are "exotes" were planted here with Peter I - Oaks. Now the diversity of the island's vegetation world is very large. Especially I would like to note the places of the coastline along the network of inland water ducts, where over the water, forming natural silver gazebos, willow bent.

The park ensemble formed over time on the Elagin Island annually in the spring-summer period is complemented by the fields and flower beds of various colors. Especially remarkable period when the tulip holiday is coming to Elagin. And this is really a holiday! First of all, for the eyes and soul. It is impossible to stay indifferent to such beauty!

Elaginoostrovsky "Zoo"

The natural animal world of Elagina Islands in St. Petersburg is represented by a wide range of different types of fauna: the pathways and trees will be blown back and forth the fearless proteins - red and blue, field and homemade mouses, a curtain and white, caressing, caressing and ermine, in the water you can see ondatru. In the bird kingdom, in addition to the usual urban "residents" - pigeons, Raven, Sinitz, Sparrow, ducks and birds are migratory - finch, raznzhenka, Lazorovka, Gray Mukholovka, Drazda, Ruch, Nightingale, Wagtail, Woodpecker, Blacktish, Mallard. In the warm time the water has a sufficiently large number of insects.

Thanks to a person, a small zoo was founded in the Elaginoostrovsky corner of St. Petersburg, where in the cells of the enclosures you can see: a black crow, a variety of chickens, pheasants, runners, Swans-Shipunov, geese, reindeer, Cameroonian goat, Liser Alice, home donkey Camilla And lamb mask.

It was placed in the historic part of the park, at the location of the XIX century farm, and from 2005 to 2010, zoological thematic exhibitions were held here. The mini-zoo has its name - "zoosphere" and is an interactive educational project, within which the animal trail is broken.

A bit of history

Elagin Island in St. Petersburg in ancient times, when it was still inhabited by the Finno-Ugric tribes, had a Finnish name. In many sources, it is given as "Misl Saari." However, the proposed meaning of this toponym as "bearish" or "black" does not match the translation from the closest sound and writing can be considered the "Black Island" version, only in this case the Finnish name will not be "mistoral", but Mista. Take for the starting point of the one that the initial Finnish name of the island was Mista Saari - "Black Island". According to the legends, the Guards of the Preobrazhensky Regiment at the beginning of the development of Peter I of these lands called the Island "Mishin", as bears were found here.

Peter I, rejecting new territories as the European city of Russia, in the conditions of the Northern War I was very constrained in the means, and therefore the lands in the vicinity of the new city crossed its associates, but provided that they would dry them and landscaping them. Elagin Island was presented by P. P. Shafirov. For the entire XVIII century, nine owners were changed here: P. Ya. Yaguzhinsky, A. P. Melgunov, G. A. Potemkin, I. P. Elagin, G. V. Orlov, and others.

The greatest contribution to the formation of the Elagino-Building Ensemble introduced I. P. Elagin, in honor of which this territory and will be called.

In the XIX century, the estate was redeemed in favor of the state with Emperor Alexander I and during the century was considered one of the favorite suburban residences of Romanov. And how to get to Elagin Islands, before the previous owners, the question did not stand - of course, in water.

Architectural ensemble

Elagin Island has large enough dimensions. To view his architectural attractions, of course, you can walk to them in a beautiful park. And if it is limited in time, how to get to Elagina Island so as to immediately get into his historic heart? Do not hope, the palace-park buildings of the ensemble are grouped so that they will still need to take a walk, but in short, everything is possible: from the metro station "Krestovsky Island" Login through the main entrance to the CPKIO and, moving on the wooden bridge, go or by the embankment to the right Or on the pointer through the park alley.

And here is a complex of amazingly slender and concise structures in the "antique" style. So only one master - architect St. Petersburg Karl Ivanovich Rossi could build. The center of the whole composition is the Elaginoostrovsky Palace. In addition, the ensemble included a weapon, kitchen and stuffing case, a musical pavilion, a greenhouse, a pavilion with a granite pier.

CPKIO yesterday

In this case, yesterday - the concept is very conditional. Rather, last time. Why is CPKIO? So Elaginoostrovsky Park was called in Soviet times, and indicated this name - culture and recreation. And now the old name is among the citizens.

After the 1917 revolution, the estate was nationalized. And in 1932, a city park opened in it, which two years after the discovery will be named after the Leningrad politician Sergey Mironovich Kirov. The park quickly became a place popular among Leningrad residents, not only because of its beauties, but also an abundance of leisure zones: sports, children's and dance sites, a variety of circle associations, chess and coarse tournaments, attractions and boating opportunities.

In the post-war time, in the first decade, the ensemble revived almost from the ruins, and then returned to the city as a place of active recreation of Leningradians. And the recreation center was opened in the palace. During this time, the park and architectural ensemble suffered greatly from vandalism. And from the end of the 1980s, Elaginoostrovsky ensemble began its true revival.

Leisure center today

The revival of the historical estate began with the discovery in the renovated building of the Palace of the Museum of Decorative and Applied Arts and Interior. Over time, in the palace began to organize interactive educational programs with the popularity of citizens, mainly for children and adolescents. And for adults are offered exciting excursions both by the Palace itself and interesting thematic routes throughout the palace and park ensemble. Here are regularly a variety of exhibitions and festivals, evenings are arranged for those who are ..., there are dance, children's and sports fields, a rope park and a tourist trail, as well as traditional boating and catamarans. Every year in June now for seven years in Elagin Island, street theaters represent their work within the annual international festival, and in the music pavilion in the summer there are musical evenings and concerts.

Here is another route for those who are looking for how to get to Elagina Islands: from the metro station "Staraya Village" walk along to Primorsky Prospekt and go close to the bridge. And then - where the soul wants!

The CPKIO was subjected to the following changes: the main alley was equipped with the oil meadow to the West Arrow, and the arrow itself was decorated with a granite terrace, on which the statues of Lviv, installed on the fees, were tested. In winter, the main alley was transformed into a long ice trace, and the oil meadow turned into a rink. In the summer, the main alley was decorated with flower beds and lawns.

Decorative vases from marble and sculptures from bronze were also mounted in this zone: "Girl, turning the stream", "Discobol" and "dancer." In addition, the Park Administration took care of creating new alleys and the construction of a summer theater with a capacity of 1600 people. But it was not all. They also built a cinema (not survived until today) and sports town.

The Great Patriotic War inflicted serious and irreparable damage to the city of St. Petersburg.
