Story

The name Pieria first appears in the sources of the 1st millennium BC. The Thracian pierides lived here, worshiping 12 deities, as well as the muses. According to Thukididis, Perdikk I (the king of Macedonia) pursued the locals, as a result of which they were forced to move beyond Strimonas. They settled at the foot of Mount Pageu. After that, the inhabitants occupied the lands from the coast to the southern part of the Imafia region and the Aliakmonas river, up to Pageu and Olympus. These mountains separated Macedonia from Thessaly, as Herodotus, Stravon, Claudius and Ptolemaeos asserted. Modern historians claim that the name of the region comes from the name of the ridge.

Numerous attempts to conquer Pieria fall on the period of Byzantium and the Middle Ages. Among those who attempted to seize land were the Slavs, Normans, Avars, Huns and many others. At one time the region belonged to the Frankish kingdom of Thessaloniki. The Venetians, who ruled over many Greek lands, failed to settle in Pieria, but they left noticeable traces. In 1389, the region was captured by the Turks. The turning point in the history of Pieria came in 1878. Then there was an uprising in Litochoro. And although it did not bring results, it is impossible to overestimate the heroism of people. A provisional government for the region was also chosen here. Its representatives sent an appeal to Europe, where the merger of Macedonia and Greece was announced. On October 16, 1912, Greek troops liberated Katerini. The final battle was the battle for Kolokuri (current Svoronos).
