If you are resting in Karelia in winter, you should definitely visit the bathhouse (if there are no contraindications for health). In the bathhouse in winter, an extraordinary spirit of romance and soulful atmosphere reigns. Karelia in winter, reviews: where to relax, what to see

After reading a lot of admiring reviews about Karelia, we decided to use the 2016-2017 New Year holidays in order to admire this miracle of nature ourselves. And here is my opinion.

A small digression. Today we publish an article that Alexey Ishchenko kindly provided us for publication. He and his family made a road trip across Karelia in winter and wrote this wonderful review. Vyacheslav and I are grateful to Alexey for cooperation with the site. And for those who also want relax in Karelia in winter, immerse yourself in the wonders of a snowy fairy tale, we can recommend the local tour operator Alem-Tour, a reliable and responsible company. Alexey, we hope for our long-term cooperation. So, is it worth visiting Karelia in winter?

Of course, it is worth looking at Karelia. At least to know that I've been there. Maybe the seasonality of the trip affects, but I think. Those who admire, for example, the embankment of Petrozavodsk, most likely did not travel further than some remote regional center. Those who admire the nature of Karelia, at least the area of Ladoga and Onega lakes, we did not climb to the north, most likely, they constantly live in some metropolis and go out into nature a couple of times a year, no further than fifty kilometers. Those who admire Kizhi or Kondopoga can also see approximately on trips along the Golden Ring, maybe a little easier, but much richer, and most importantly closer to civilization, for example, in Suzdal.

Well, now a little more detail.

1. Two words about the road. We drove from Kazan, route options vary greatly, from 1500 to 2000 km. But given that the navigator builds short routes in remote areas of the Kirov, Kostroma, Vologda regions, you can go everywhere there, but the roads are often broken in summer, and in winter, even on good roads, snow / thaw, snow / thaw. As a result, there was still that washboard, so I had to go in 2-3 gears for several tens of kilometers. Conversely, taught by bitter experience, they traveled through large regional centers to the M7 highway and further along it. More than 1800 km, but fast and not shaking. And also a feature. In Karelia, the main roads are well in very good condition in terms of the quality of asphalt and cleanliness.

2. Petrozavodsk.

Small, not very clean town. There is not much to watch. The embankment painted in other reviews can be considered ennobled, only considering that the rest of the shore of Lake Onega within the city is overgrown with impassable bush forest and built up with an industrial zone. The Museum of the History of Navigation, or whatever it is called, was closed, there are holidays, nothing interesting can be seen from the outside. On the plus side, the rented apartment was very decent and not expensive - 2000 rubles per day. And when I was looking for options, there are most of them, the culture of providing housing is at its best.

We didn't go to Kudama, for three a three-hour trek of about 12,000, given that about 35,000 were paid for the entire trip, this is a mess. Opportunities for the child to start up in full, but my wife and I, to reduce the cost, for a more modest one - NO. As a result, we went to Chalna.

In principle, it is interesting, a lot of dogs. We saw that those Huskies that we see in our cities are only one of the subspecies.

To pat the dogs, though the Huska managed to bite his wife, so be careful, especially those who are afraid of dogs, they feel it. Five minutes two laps on dogs.

Look at just two deer, and then from a distance, from a height, in the zoo, and even closer. But in principle, the excursion is worth its money, they gave something about two thousand, and the trip is several times closer than to Kudama.

Yes, it is important, there are no puppies at all, but about Kudama, the guide said that there might be, but with great doubt, so promises are again higher than reality.

4. The village of Kinerma. In general, nothing cool, old houses, there are no people, but ...

5. Sortavala. The town is cleaner and outwardly more beautiful than Petrozavodsk, the proximity to Finland affects. A beautiful road there along the lakes, in the town itself there is also a beautiful view of the lake. Museum of Wooden Paintings. Nice, and most importantly, you understand what a hellish work, only on one picture, and there are three dozen of them.

Beautifully, according to foreign countries, they managed to make a hyped tourism point out of a simple career.

It is interesting to see, I have never been to such places before. In general, it is worth a look, although, probably, it is much cooler in summer, since you cannot swim on boats in winter.

Well, to go, if this is one of the goals of the whole trip, just for the sake of this place, even from St. Petersburg, I would not go. Well, fly in the ointment, a tiny toilet and two cafes for crowds of people, huge queues.

Mountain is a strong saying, again expectations are greatly overestimated. A hill as high as a three-storey house, the nearby lake is slightly visible above the tops of the pine trees.

You have to drive fifteen kilometers off the highway, to be honest, it’s a pity for time and even gasoline.

8. Kondopoga.

The town is small, around the industrial area. Stands on a beautiful lake. Inside, it may be a little cleaner than in Petrozavodsk, but the town itself is kind of old, just old, not old. Although everything is modern in the central square, especially chain stores, everyone is present, well, where without them. It's funny, there are three car washes for the whole town, two of which do not work in winter, and the third has two washing places. By the way, there are no gas stations in Karelia, only in Petrozavodsk, who drives gas.

The famous Kondopoga wooden church is large, high, and impressive both in age and in what still stands. Nice view of the lake, but there is no infrastructure around the church, not even a toilet. And around the village and industrial area. When I read the reviews, there was a complete impression that she was somewhere in the center, as it were, the basis of the town, but no.

Beautiful, impressive, only slippery everywhere.

Lots of souvenirs. I did not see any super beautiful forest. Not cooler than, for example, in our MariEl. I would definitely make some kind of bridge over the waterfall, especially if suspended, it would be generally cool.

But it's also worth a look. After Ruskeala, the second place that disappointed expectations least of all.

10. Medvezhyegorsk, drove in only to spend the night. Not any impression remained, the same old town as Kondopoga. But the rented apartment is significantly inferior to the Petrozavodskaya one, maybe we got one like this, they rented it in pauses, since BOOKING let us down cruelly. We drove through the White Sea-Baltic Canal in the dark, we didn't see anything, that's a pity.

Well, first of all, the road. And then I read a lot of nonsense that "you can get through in two jeeps." There is an excellent track to the Great Bay, cleared, although we drove right after a snowfall, only sprinkled with nothing, slippery and a bunch of sharp turns with hills. But not sprinkled, maybe even better, less dirt. 100 kilometers in two hours on rear wheel drive is absolutely real. From Velikaya Guba to Oyatevshchina, forty kilometers through the forest along a road under construction. One track has been cleared, we have a Hover, but any passenger car will pass there. The only thing is that there are not enough pockets for driving, if you either back up or need a four-wheel drive to drive away. But we didn’t get there or back to the meeting, so we didn’t feel any problems at all. We drove straight to the shore, right at the course of about a kilometer, the island and Kizhi. Probably it was possible to take a chance on the car, just the frost hit at thirty. But they did not dare, they spanked on foot. The road rolled by snowmobiles immediately began to take away to the right along the coast. It became scary, suddenly, if you go straight to the island, you can fall through, there are no traces at all. But they took a chance, flooded. Only then did they understand what was the matter.

The main church of Kizhi is not opposite, but to the right, there the traces led. We went to the island. There are several old houses and small churches brought there as a museum.

But everything is simply not impressive. We looked around, the main church is a kilometer and a half further along the island. You won't be able to walk along the island, you fall through the virgin soil, there is a road, but it strays so much that it takes twice as long. There goes a groove, carries out excursions, probably if you wait, they will give you a lift. But how long to wait for them? We continued our fanatical journey, went out on the ice and peskodral, since there is practically no snow on the ice. Hovercraft often ride on the ice, take excursions from the Great Bay, but it seems expensive, at least for the money they ask, there will be no impressions there.

The temple is large, beautiful, there are many domes, around the wall is like a wooden fortress. Only one room is allowed inside for five hundred rubles. The altar, the icons, but, in general, again, there is nothing superb.

I would like to get into the main building, to visit the turrets with domes, but they are not allowed there. There is another house next to it and the atmosphere of antiquity has been recreated there, but again much more modest than in Suzdal. In general, it is worth visiting, but in reality, the labor and money costs for visiting it would be reasonable if you could get directly to the temple by your car, without walking on foot, and so, again, deceiving expectations. Well, at least they took us back to the car on a snowmobile. Although we ran well on foot, the city life is not conducive to such walks, for a long time we have not walked so much.

12. We returned back along the opposite shore of Lake Onega through Pudozh. There was not a single settlement there, a little at night at 30 degrees they were not left without gasoline, they refueled in some village with a resident from plastic bottles.

Conclusions and recommendations.
  • Maybe I'm, of course, a little strict about the sights of Karelia. I traveled all over Russia west of the Urals and countries such as the Czech Republic, Greece, Turkish Pamukkale, Spain, Italy and much more. It is clear that one should not compare with these places. But you need someone to describe the situation a little more objectively.
  • Expectations that are too high add an unnecessary fly in the ointment, and there it is already not ideal, in order to flavor it with tar, but whoever understands that it is necessary to go there and for whom it is real will still get there. Of course, it can be much cooler there in the summer, as they say. But I won't believe in these pink descriptions.
  • I have been to Karelia, I saw, I made a mark, but I will believe the summer delights of Karelia with a proper stretch and will visit there only if I am passing through.
